Opportunity Venture (Asia) Limited (OV) is an investment company focused on the Asia Pacific, Central Asia and Middle East markets, dedicated to seeking out businesses with innovative technologies or unique market positions for investment. OV’s core mission is to support companies with long-term sustainable development potential while generating stable returns through investment. The company’s investment strategy emphasizes responsible corporate governance, which is a key factor in its success. By investing in high-potential enterprises, OV not only drives profitability for these companies but also fosters sustainable growth to enhance the overall value of its investment portfolio.
When selecting investment targets, OV typically focuses on businesses that possess competitive advantages, technological barriers, or other unique resources. These companies are often capable of sustained growth and differentiate themselves in their respective industries. “Our investment scope spans multiple industries, with particular attention given to eight core sectors: Renewable Energy, IT Solutions, Financial Technology, Healthcare, Media Entertainment, Real Estate, Metals Mining and Agriculture Commodities. These sectors all exhibit substantial market demand and are expected to experience significant growth in the coming years,” says Philip Ma, OV's Managing Partner.
Investing in Deep Tech to Enhance Future Quality of Life
Recently, OV secured a US$40 million financing round for Xpanceo, driven by profound market insights and confidence in the technology. OV first engaged with the Xpanceo team two years ago when they showcased the development potential of their smart contact lens technology.
After extensive research, including detailed analyses of the company’s products, multiple discussions with core team members, and careful evaluations of their market plans, OV ultimately decided to invest in Xpanceo. “Xpanceo has the potential to transform the Extended Reality (XR) market landscape, especially with its innovative smart contact lenses, which differ significantly from conventional lenses. They not only offer innovation but also meet consumer demands for convenience, health, and privacy,” says Philip Ma.
A high-tech company rooted in Dubai, Xpanceo is committed to developing the next generation of smart contact lenses. These lenses aim to redefine how people interact with the digital world. The vision of Xpanceo is to seamlessly blend the real and digital worlds through a weightless, invisible smart contact lens, thereby transforming our technological experiences in everyday life. Smart contact lenses are not only Augmented Reality (AR) or Virtual Reality (VR), but they are also at the core of future XR experience, merging all devices we currently rely on, such as smartphones, computers, and smartwatches.
“The founding purpose of Xpanceo was to address the various inconveniences and negative impacts that current technological devices impose on our lives,” remarks Valentyn Volkov, co-founder and scientific partner of Xpanceo. With the proliferation of smartphones, tablets, and laptops, people have become increasingly dependent on these devices, yet they face health issues as well. For example, constant screen use can lead to eye fatigue, impair vision, and even cause poor posture. While these devices are indispensable, they can be cumbersome and inconvenient to carry, sometimes hindering social interactions.
Smart contact lenses address these issues by providing an intuitive and natural interface that consolidates the features of all digital devices, allowing users to interact with the digital world without needing to reach for their phones or other devices. Furthermore, these smart lenses will serve as a central hub for digital living, enabling users to engage with various types of content, including videos, social media, and gaming.
Not just a technological product, the smart contact lenses are also inbuilt with multiple sensors to provide health monitoring features, measuring critical health indicators such as intraocular pressure, glucose, and cortisol, while offering personalized health recommendations. Additionally, they can help visually impaired users correct common vision problems like nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism, and even provide color blindness correction, allowing users to perceive a wider range of colors. The lenses will also feature night vision and zoom capabilities, making life more convenient and safer.
Technological Breakthroughs
The advanced capabilities of Xpanceo's smart contact lenses are the result of several significant technological breakthroughs. “Nano-optical and nano-photonic technologies enable Xpanceo to manipulate light in an ultra-compact form, creating high-resolution images on the contact lenses without compromising transparency or comfort. Additionally, Xpanceo utilizes novel 2D materials such as graphene, which possess high optical transparency and conductivity, allowing us to embed electronic components into the smart lenses while maintaining visual clarity. These materials also effectively control the direction of light, equipping the lenses with a precise optical system,” Volkov notes.
“Artificial Intelligence (AI) is another core technology of the smart lenses. Not only does AI facilitate seamless interaction between the lenses and the environment, but it also drives further innovation in lens technology by predicting the properties of new materials and analyzing health data to provide personalized recommendations, greatly enhancing the user's health management experience,” he further explains.
The smart contact lenses also merge non-invasive neural interface technology, enabling users to control the lens features through their brain activity. This technology offers a more intuitive hands-free experience, significantly improving device convenience. The successful merging of these technologies positions the smart contact lenses as one of the most innovative and promising products in today's market.
Xpanceo is confident about its future development. The company is currently focused on refining the final prototype of the smart contact lenses and plans to conduct comprehensive testing in 2026. This testing will include verifying the lenses health monitoring features, AR visual effects, and embedded electronic components.
Xpanceo's primary goal is to complete clinical trials to ensure safety and efficacy. Once testing is successful, the company will proceed to mass production. The smart contact lenses are expected to become mainstream technology within the next five to ten years. By that time, around 15,000 early adopters will be using the smart lenses, with user base projected to reach 10 million by 2032. As the product sees widespread adoption, it will not only transform daily life but also revolutionize various industries, including healthcare and entertainment.
